Viera High school rising senior Olivia Byrd has been selected to serve as State Chair for the 2021 Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) annual convention. The organization is one of the state’s top journalism associations at the high school level and hosts approximately 1,500 of the state’s top journalism students and advisers at its convention in the spring. In this key role, Byrd will be heading the student executive board to develop the Fall workshops and Spring convention activities. As the student State Chair, she will be working closely with district directors and other student representatives to supervise the registration desk, greet speakers, prepare awards, and coordinate student activities such as dances and other events.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to be the 2020-2021 FSPA State Chair. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to plan and create the event I’ve looked forward to each year of my high school career,” says Byrd. She has been the managing editor for the school’s news program, VTV News, since 2019 and continues to lead the staff into the 2020 school year.
“This is the first year one of our students has been honored with the title of FSPA Convention Chair,” according to Principal Sarah Robinson. “Olivia excels at leading creative teams, and I am confident she will do excellent work,” she added.
Byrd’s new position follows VTV’s continued success winning video competitions at the state and district level. Several of the team’s works recently achieved four FSPA Best of the Best awards, which are the highest awards possible in the state. Beyond state competition, the VTV team recently garnered 1st place wins in four of the eight categories possible in the Brevard Student Film Festival.
